After thinking about this for a while and looking at main st.
It looks to be that the Dollar General would be a big improvement compared to some of the other buildings on main. Run down buildings, empty buildings and the building beside the old Napa store with the same stuff in the store front for years and years (whats up with that ?). It don't look like the door has been opened in years. Used car lot that looks like its never opened and WP is supposed to be getting street scrape. Duh....... Just hope you can get building owners to refurbish these buildings before you pretty up the street.

Oh by the way saw DOT doing some surveying on main st. today.

I hope you're right Razzo. I hope the DG jumpstarts some other business facade improvements.

Finally, the DOT starts moving forward. Been a long time coming.

OK, I have seen the picture. I have gone downtown to look at the old buildings. In looking at the picture (which is the same architecture as in Charleston), I like the way it looks and I believe that this can be a good thing for West Pelzer. I am with Old Mac on protecting the trees in the commons. It's not a Macy's, but should last a lot longer than a costly business. I believe this will be a kick start to something better. I believe it will give Bilo's the incentive to lower some of their prices. I believe it will employ people. I believe that it will bring in business from across the river and Williamston. It will definitely bring in some income for West Pelzer. Now, if Walmart decided to come into West Pelzer, there would be no more for any other businesses for miles around. Its up to the council to get their ducks in a row and form the appropriate ordinances to make Dollar General pleasing to the eye.

Default Outsider looking In

I've been watching the posts of this town for years now. And I think this discussion has been the most interesting one I have seen to date. I have to agree about not having the Dollar General build on the site. Be very strange to see a fresh new building that is employing people against all the rotted, dead, delapidated, closed down buildings you have on that street. I don't mean to sound so rude, but you have a closed restaurant that could be useful and be operational but the owner does not want to lease it out. You have vacant buildings across the street aways with what looks to be some construction going on inside. No, I am wrong. Its been going on for three years now. And its the same way as you go up the street. You can make the prettiest sidewalks you want but if the owners of all the rundown buildings you have don't get off their keisters and make them usable and attractive, then West Pelzer will always look like West Pelzer. The mortuary and the Fire Department are the best looking buildings you got on that street. And I think that is sad. The way a town looks is a direct outlook on what the community thinks of themselves. So I say, West Pelzer, wake up and get your town looking better. Not the council, not the mayor, but you citizens that own those buildings along Main. I saw earlier that you have like 1% community co-operation? It shows on Main. If your an owner of one of the MANY buildings on Main and you can stand back and be proud to own it. God bless ya. West Pelzer is a great town. Wish the community as a whole also was. And Townee, you had an attitude huh? Bout time someone in that town did. I know I'll get a bashing for this, trust me, it won't be the first, but I thought you might want an outsiders view of your town.

I think most feel that big improvements need to be made and I feel confident that we will implement changes that will lead us in that direction. I think it's going to be important for us at Town Hall to try and work out incentives for the owners to make improvements to the existing buildings. I for one would love to start with the Police Department. If we're going to be there, then I would like to see improvements to the facade. It could be that we make the improvements and work out an arrangement with the owner to account for the cost...I don't know. It would be a great start though and a way to help encourage others to do the same. This is definitely a goal we can achieve. I appreciate your comment.

I don't know if you've heard, but the old building beside the NAPA store is going to be torn down. The Chapman family is donating that property to the Town and we will be building our first park there. It will stretch back approx. 210 ft x 100 ft wide. We are working on securing the funding at this point to help with this project. I know people are excited about it as this is a change that has been needed for a long time as well.
